there were thousands of insects at the wildlife center this a.m. and it was slow enough that i actually had time to take some shots. (i am warning you, there IS a spider at the end of this post, but it’s a cool shot, you’re going to want to see it.)
moving on, the butterflies wouldn’t hold still and i didn’t have time to chase them down. but, there were some great species to chose from.
first, a bee. (buzzy, what kind of bee is this?)
this bee was very small, about the size of a black bean.
oh wait, i DO have a butterfly. i’m adding this after the initial post. forgot about this guy! it’s a marine blue butterfly:
they’re about the size of a dime.
now, no one is going to say they love flies, but check out this guy. he’s sort of interesting, isn’t he?
i’m learning that there are just tons of fake bees out there!
ok, maybe cute bugs are your style?
baby grasshopper! nymph, if you will.
or perhaps you prefer the elegance of an adult grasshopper?
next we have two spider shots. the first is kind of artsy, with my co-volunteer walking by in the background. the second is a shot you might like if you’re into really bad ass spiders.
there were hundreds of spiders in webs all over the place today. we hated to destroy their webs, but in some cases we couldn’t take care of the animal if we didn’t take the web down. sucks because we know they worked hard making the webs.
i have a really graphic shot of a spider with it’s catch, but because i like you all so much, i’m going to keep that off the blog.
nap time!
oh, okay, one last butterfly. it’s a low rider. that’s not what kind of butterfly he is, ….he’s just flying low…

I think that bee may be in the genus Encera. The ab looks like an Encera.
Comment by buzzybeegirl August 16, 2008 @ 10:36 pmThe butterfly looks like it’s trying to fly under the radar into enemy territory …
Comment by jamesviscosi August 17, 2008 @ 1:23 amI’ve always liked bee flies. They’re like Charlie Chaplin’s little tramp, with no protection but their own wits.
Comment by lavenderbay August 17, 2008 @ 10:49 amHmmm, I’d like to give that spider a bat or two with my left paw!
