i’ve gone to the same sandwich shop for work lunches for a year now….about once or twice a month.
everytime i go in i am greeted by…the sandwich crab. a young, brown haired miserable girl. i greet her cheerily each time and with every sandwich i am met with a cold stare and a nasty “do you know what you want?” or something like that.
many times i debate: should i call the manager and complain about how crabby this beeyotch is?
months ago i decided, “clearly she HATES my cheeriness!” and because she deserves no better….i will keep that shit up.
this afternoon i go in for my-veggie-on-wheat-no-onions. she looks as miserable as usual.
she takes my order. she meets me moments later at the cash register. i smile and hand her my debit card with a jiggle of the ponytails.
“thank you!” i say as she hands me my card.
she looks at me and says.
….
“have a pleasant day.”
well, that’s lame…but more than lame….it’s pretty freakin’ congenial for her. i wonder if that’s the sweetest she can be.
nice job sandwich crab. nice to see i’m cracking your shell.

and there was much rejoicing.
and there were orange chocolate cupcakes.
delicious!
and there were fat tires.
and there was a very happy bear. i took him to the book store and to the liquor shop so he could get cuddled by strangers. (he loves that!) but no one would give him the time of day. they at least gave him a cookie at the liquor shop.
then a few friends dropped by throughout the evening to rub his belly and comment on how much weight he has gained. we all agree…he looks great. it’s been a struggle to keep weight on him for years.
i think he had a good day.
i love my little guy.

getting my new refrigerator today! after having to throw away hundreds of dollars worth of food. cody bear and pickles were devastated that theire ground beef, turkey dogs and cheese went bad. i was devastated that the chocolate soy ice cream melted, then i dropped it and it blew up all over me.
getting brakes fixed on the ole honda tomorrow. thank god. trying to stop in that car when you have any speed going is a bone jarring experience.
how are the dogs, you ask? cody bear is doing great! pickles is acting funny, like something hurts. but, it could just be because she’s a border collie and…she’s crazy. she only acts that way when she is wearing her harness to walk with cody bear. drama queens, both of them.
here she is frolicking in last week’s rain showers:
update: the new frigidaire was supposed to be delivered while i was at work around 10am. buzzy was going to be here. but they just called and they’re on their way now. so i had to call in to my boss to be late. hope he’s not mad!

today was the first time i played easter hostess.
it was pretty cool. i didn’t cook everything, some friends brought stuff, which made things easier. we had a vegetarian easter meal with mojitos or prickly pear margaritas. and a delicious and festive cake for dessert.
9 people and 4 dogs in attendance.

no, the bag does not belong to the poodle…clearly. it totally doesn’t match her collar.
earlier in the day i ran into someone i know at the petrol station. THEN i ran into a friend i hadn’t seen in a while at a red light. i LOVE running into people i know in random places.
and the doggies and i had a great morning hike in the fresh spring air.
when all is said and done…it was one of my favorite easter days ever.
wish i didn’t have to work tomorrow…..

i got a special message from hannah this morning. i noticed she didn’t use my real name. a blatant attempt to get on the blog. i respect that….and ….i miss you, too, hannah.

i’m so stupid, i knew it was more than likely there would be a funeral for my grandmother, but did i pack any clothes for it? no. dumb.
ok, before i give my sister her laptop back, and before i go shopping for a funeral outfit, i do have to tell you about one of the many characters i encountered while travelling yesterday. let’s call him….dirty peanut crotch man:
so, i’m sitting next to this guy who was a little too large for airplane seating. a row of 3 and he’s in the middle. we had to leave the arm rests up and i had to squish as close to the window as possible to give him a few extra inches. (this was hard because i really am not into sharing my personal space with strangers. i’ll share details, but space?…not really)
so, i fall asleep and when i wake up the guy is opening a grocery bag and pulling out a 1 pound bag of salted peanuts. fine, i’m not allergic. when he hears the refreshment cart is wheeling by soon, he stashes the bag away.
the flight attendant gives him some honey roasted peanuts and an orange juice. i don’t get anything.
he was very excited for these new peanuts. he drops one. it falls between his legs. he reaches for it, but now it’s under him. he’s hunting. digging. it’s rolling around on the airplane seat where many many people have rested their buttocks. he finds it.
he pops it in his mouth.
later, once the attendant has collected his trash, he opens his stach of peanuts and has a few more.
we landed about an hour later.

buzzy is here so we can get some work done…but i’m forcing her to eat my leftovers from last night, blogging the recipes THEN i will work on the antiques project.
one has to have priorities.
first of all, i’m so glad that some of you wanted my recipes! thanks a bunch. so here goes, from the kitchen of goodbear:
goodbear’s not-bad-for-a-gringa salsa:
1 fresh jalapeno pepper – chopped
1 fresh anaheim chili pepper – diced
3 medium fresh tomatoes – diced (i like mine chunky)
3 cloves fresh garlic(i sometimes use more!)
1/4 cup fresh chopped cilantro
1/4 cup fresh chopped green onion – green and white parts
1 can stewed tomatoes – dice the chunks
2 tbsp. diced green chilis
salt & pepper to taste
i like my salsa hot and chunky! the night before serving, chop, slice and dice the peppers, garlic, onion and tomatoes. mix em up. take your stewed tomatoes, but before adding them to the mix, slice the tomato to your preferred chunkiness. add all remaining ingredients EXCEPT the cilantro.
over night the flavors will blend and the salsa becomes a little hotter. right before serving add the fresh chopped cilantro. you can add it the night before, too, but since we have so many cilantro lovers here at cody bear’s friends….it stands out more if you add it right before serving.
serves 2 – 15 people, depending on how hungry they are and how tasty the other dishes are!
goodbear’s damn-i-need-a-side-dish easy corn salad:
2 cans whole kernel corn – rinsed well & drained
1 can black beans – rinsed well & drained
1 medium red onion – chopped
1/2 red wine vinagrette dressing
1-2 tsp ground cumin
1/2-3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
salt & pepper to taste
prepare the night before serving. in medium mixing bowl mix red wine vinagrette dressing and cumin. next add chopped onion, corn and beans. stir ingredients. and just a little salt & pepper. again, i like adding the cilantro the next day. also, depending on what brand of dressing you use, you may want to add a couple extra tbsp.s of olive oil.
this dish takes about 5-10 minutes to prepare. i have no idea how many folks it serves.
here is buzzy, enjoying her leftovers and working diligently on her defense:

thanks for stopping by!

surprisingly, my boss had a good time at his bbq bday party.
of course he did…he got to grill!
we all brought the food and he brought this cool grill that he usually takes to tailgates at the university.
now i’m home…and i will be working on the computer all night on a few different site projects that need to be finished asap. i will take respite every now and then and hopefully i will find some blog pal’s new entry to read during respite!
pickles is chewing a bone and cody bear is sleeping at my feet.

we’re grilling at the office today to celebrate the birth of my boss. he’s very excited. (not really. not at all)
m and i are in charge of the vegetarian options. here are my two entries: chips and salsa and a sw corn salady type concoction.

so fresh and yummy!
let me know if you want either recipe. they’re really good and the salad is super easy.

oh, hello there. welcome to goodbear’s kitchen.
above the sink we have my new lucky cat, paw raised and ready to bring me prosperity. or…at least keep me from overcooking the asparagus again.
the kitchen got a deep cleaning today because the pet sitter is coming later this month. i’m flying back east in a few weeks to see my grandmother one last time.
regarding the kitchen:
my dogs think i am an amazing chef!
no raw chicken is allowed in my kitchen. it freaks me out.
i make THE BEST TOASTED CHEESE SANDWICHES IN THE WORLD. i have people that will vouch for this.
my border collie is laying in the middle of the kitchen floor. she has eyes the color of coffee beans and she is waiting or me to drop something.
under my kitchen table lies my cody bear, a mandarin collie who has to eat four times a day and needs meds to digest his meals.
and there is a black cat with white mittens sitting on the counter waiting for chow.
there are always beers in the fridge.
and again…best toasted cheese sandwiches in the world. plus,….i know my way around a potato, as well.
mangia mangia!

it all started because i needed to grill some sirloin burgers for cody bear’s class tomorrow. soon it was the gang grillin’ at a friend’s house. i already had the dog’s beef, so i went and got the remaining grillers and a garden burger for me.
we start with the veggie marinade. the most important ingredient? ajo rojo – a hot and sweet creole hardneck garlic straight from my friend’s organic farm!

ajo rojo
got the sauce ready while the baby reds bubbled:
so, i got everything ready for grilling then drove over. i baked the taters in the oven in their garlic balsamic sauce, then we grilled veggie kabobs of sweet bell pepper, red onion and mushrooms, as well as grilling asparagus in a packet aluminum foil. and of course the burgers. 3 for people, one for pickles, 2 for cody bear. and a garden burger for me.
i’m not going to tell you that i LOVE garden burgers. they’re not delicious. but the veggies were yummy! one of the guys was in charge of the burger flipping.

now, here’s the final product, my veggies and garden burger in the foreground, pickles’ sirloin paddy in the back.
again, all this just because i needed to make some sirloin burgers for my cody bear. and he couldn’t even go because my friends’ neighbors’ dogs stress him out so badly!
pickles – “thanks for the beef. give me some more. please?”
all this after work, after the vet and before a long night of site updating which i’m about to start…..NOW!
night night!
