saturday night.
watching snl, sitting at my desk editing photos.
pickles gets tired, walks into her crate and lays down.
the cat comes up. she pats me on the leg. i let her jump up. she purrs then pops down.
she walks toward the crate.
pickles sits up.
the sniff each other through the open door.
spree walks in. pickles looks at her like she’s a space alien.
cat rubs against the dog a couple times then makes her way to the back of the crate. lays down.
dog looks confused…then lays back down.
and there you have it.
weirdness.

i know.
i haven’t written much lately. busy with the photography business and busy trying (unsuccessfully) to get my life straightened out.
cody bear and pickles are doing great. we just finished a super long walk in the cool fall air.
“why haven’t we heard about insects lately?” you’re asking. right? you’re asking that?
well, i have to admit…my heart wasn’t really into it after buzzy and dr. bee left town.and also, strangely….the bees have disappeared. i’ve always had bees sleeping here. but not for months.
what i did have was 7 black widows on my front porch. i had a friend come over one night after i realized they were there. we launched a wild assault and killed 6 that night. i killed on the day before.
they’re gone now. can’t have them there. too dangerous for the munchkins.
so…fly, mosquito, spider. but no bee.

so…a list of highlights from friday’s wedding ceremony, perhaps?
1. wore 3 inch heels…the right one broke after an hour. i stuck the night out balancing on a dangling heel.
2. the groom wore shorts. not sure why i bought a new skirt and shirt….
3. i may have abandoned my date for a few minutes to snuggle the wedding puppy.
4. there were two crashers, my friend leslie (just kidding…she just changed her rsvp status!) and this little moth.
5. the bride and groom are both professional photographers, (as were about 30% of the guests) so they decided not to hire a photog. instead they had a portable studio set up in the back and the guests triggered the shutter with their foot. the lighting was good. and…well, as you could guess…that little feature got busier and busier as more drinks were imbibed.
6. i didn’t get any cake. 
7. it was an open bar. when i ran out of ones…i started tipping him with cookies i smuggled from the buffet area.
8. the entire event took place under the watchful eyes of this jolly buddha.
that has to mean good fortune, right?
a fun time was had by all.

oh wow. what a week. what a lousy week. thank god i had some dogs and my cat to make me laugh and give me some lovins’.
i won’t even bore you with the crap but it was a collection of incidents from all facets of our tiny world here. work, friends, family, etc. you get the picture.
so i shall list the good stuff:
since i haven’t been riding my bike(s) enough lately ( i think it’s the heat) i’m treating myself to a new helmet after my next payday.
cody bear has only barfed 2 times in the last 3 weeks and still weighs almost 50 pounds.
my cat got sick while i was out of town but is finally feeling like her old kitty self again. she has only been sick once in 13 years! some sort of kitty cold.
alli is coming home for a visit next weekend! should be good fun to have a friend in town.
* plans are under way with my new business partner. i can’t wait to tell you all about it!!!!
only 4 more months till my sister and her husband are here for a visit! the dogs are going to love them!
so, see, there’s alot to be cheery about.

welcome to goodbear’s house. well, her front patio, at least.
my first pair of friends have started their move. these folks to portland. their real estate agent demanded they get rid of their many potted plants. i guess she thinks they were cluttering the yard or something. foolish woman.
so i am fostering some plants! as you can see, they’ve assimilated with my existing potted plants quite well!

the heat has been getting to everyone. it was time to get out of town…and, after leaving town….ride a train down a hole for several hundred feet!
we took a day trip and went on a mine tour! it was 47 degrees F below ground. 100 degrees back home and we had to wear sweatshirts. hurray!
you ride a train down. well…sort of a train. more of a picnic bench on iron wheels.
they bundled us in yellow jackets and gave us helmets and battery packs with 8 hour lights. they explained the history, techniques and lore . . .
OF WHICH I REMEMBER NOTHING!
i was just there for the cold air!
last saturday, over breakfast, we thought about this hair brained day trip. glad we did it. i suggest you follow through with one of your hair brained ideas.

why does this dog look so happy?
perhaps she learned that her mom’s office is NOT going to be moving to the other side of town!!!!! hurray! what a relief.
here are some other updates:
buzzy and her man are almost all packed and are moving to cali in two weeks. so sad! california has stolen many of my friends.
i was very sick of hearing what kind of beer they were drinking in the white house this week.
codybear has a vet appointment tomorrow.
one of my friends got west nile virus last weekend when we went to the mountains outside of town. she’s been sick all week but is getting better.

and so goodbear and buzzybeegirl found themselves at the botanical gardens one evening…..
they heard a buzzing. more of a hum, or a whirrrrr. hundreds of figeater beetles were visiting the garden that same night.
here they have found the motherload: a juicey fig.
but what’s this?
how sad. scads of dead fig beetles littering the ground be low. as you can see, they are a striking metallic green.
there were other lovely critters, such as this resting fritilary butterfly…
they wandered through the grounds. they chatted. they attended a small chinese music concert. they cursed themselves for leaving their “real” cameras at home.
but they were too hungry to last long at the concert. they left to meet buzzy’s husband at a mexican restaurant and pigged out. goodbear woke up the next morning second guessing her menu selection….

one year ago today i brought this gentle yet sassy border collie puppy home.
when i announced i was getting a border collie puppy everyone’s first reaction was…., “how do you think cody bear will handle it?”
he handled it o.k. actually. but she was just terrified of him initially. here she hides from him while he runs hell-on-paws around the yard…
she didn’t know what to make of this fast moving, furry bear.
within weeks she grew confident. she took his toys….she took his chewies…
cody bear was patient…and frustrated.
but mostly, he was afraid to stand up for himself against her. he somehow sensed i would be mad. so he tried to be gentle. tried not scare the puppy.
they learned to share.
one year later…
they’re inseperable. they get eachother goin’.
they’re bff…they’re family.
they play hard. they’re complete opposites.
cody bear and i talked about it. it’s been a year.
we both agree: we love her. she smells bad, she’s constantly dirty, she’s kind of selfish, her nose is always in the wrong place….but…we both love her…and we’re going to keep her.
ha ha! like you would believe me if i told you i would toss her back!?

i know what you’re thinking! you’re all like, “hey goodbear, it’s june already. where are all the creepy, adorable and intriguing insect shots you usually post in spring and summer months?”
well i’m so glad you asked. the answer has many parts: 1. i’ve been busy…and one thing i was busy with is buzzybeegirl’s masters achievement! congrats buzzy! she’s going to update you all soon. 2. i’ve started a new nature blog and have been posting my sexier insect shots there. and trust me…i literally mean sexy. 3. well….actually you don’t need all the reasons you just want to see the critters.
right?
ok, critter number one…a beetle:
i can’t tell you yet what kind of beetle he is, since there are more beetle species than there are excuses for not blogging on time. many, many more. but buzzy is going to check it out, and maybe some of our entomology friends will chime in, too. i think he’s a teensy scarab guy…but i’m delirious with thurst, so what do i know?
next, we have the assassin bug and his little aphid friend. (buzzy…is that an aphid? i don’t freakin’ know. it’s smaller than my confidence of identifying buggie.)
i know…the pictures suck. it was dark…windy…and the minibuggies were small!
if you get a minute, please send congrats to buzzy, who coasted through her defense. let us clarify…the reason she coasted through the actual defense is because she worked her ass off for years. the day of the defense was a forgone conclusion. she was cool, confident, and she rocked it. the committee meeting was almost a mere formality…but only because she worked so hard on her research and had such a great project and a few people who were devoted to supporting her.
so yay buzzy. and yay mini beetle.
