g’ mornen…et’s me….pickles!
invitin’ you in to see my typical erly satuhday mornen!
it was a luvely mornen. not the typical hot. we were all cheery about this. so, it seems like a great day to play with my flower pot…
lately this is my favorite toy. better than my broom, even. i can push it around with my nose, stick my paws in it, toss it in the air, what have ye.
now this goes on for a great while, but no morning is complete without chasing cody bear.
we take breaks so that i can sniff and he can keep watch out for neighborhood cats and dogs.
the rest of the morning i enjoy sitting at the front door watching cars and bikes go by with my brother. wrestling with him in the living room. tossing my food bowl around, then perhaps chewing on it. digging holes in the yard. that’s always fun, though i only get to do it when mom goes inside. sniffing the cat. squeezing toys. maybe practice some tricks with mom and her bottomless bag of cheesey treats.
mom leaves to volunteer soon, and i should be pretty tired by then, but only about half as dirty as i plan to get today. my goal is to end the day as filthy as possible. i’ll get one more good roll in the dirt before she leaves….

a border chow. the worst thing ever was her dieing. her being sick. the best thing ever was knowing her.
here’s where i am: i’ve gone from crying every day four years ago to thinking of her daily and crying horribly on the big days. her birthday. her adoption day. her day of passing. that’s today, 2004. so four years without a dog who loved me more than anyone else ever has. without someone i loved more than i’ve ever done.
what was she like? she was black with silky fur. and she seemed to read my mind. intuit everything i was thinking. she was the smartest and most beautiful dog i’ve ever known.
she was perfect and familiar. she was home and she was inspiration. she was beautiful and comforting. freakishly smart and somewhat magnetic. she is responsible for many of my friends deciding to get a dog.
she imparted more than just hunger and gratitude. she recognized challenges. wagged when she met the challenges. she knew fear, and empathized with the fearful. she solved problems. sought the ill and went out of her way to comfort them. she found those people fearful of dogs and weasled her way into their hearts.
and she way my dog. and i will never understand why i was so lucky to have her as my baby loki. why i got to share those years with the most special dog.
fortunately i have cody bear and pickles, who somehow knew to be extra cute, extra fun and extra well behaved today!
i wish they had known her.
i love you loki!

i’ll post a bigger, heavier post in a little bit. i have to scan some photos at work before i can publish it.

native bees…each the size of a grain of rice. 11 days ago i serendipidously found an aggragation of them making a branch of my mesquite their home. the very second i saw them…i knew not to be scared….i knew it was a rare and special sigthing.
11 days later they’re still here, but diminished in numbers. r., an ecology and biology professor proclaimed i had good bug karma. when he said that i knew my initial thought was right: not every one gets to see 5 to 6 hundred of these tiny metallic bees …preparing for bed.
after the first week it was clear the numbers were diminishing. last night about 20. tonight: exactly 8.
a.h. says it’s ok. they hopefully have done their job. more baby bees will be back. but i know that the next generation won’t find their way back to my mesquite.
tonight at 10:30 i said good bye to the last 8. they seemed tired. fading.

ack! i’m SO sorry i haven’t posted in so long. been so busy with work and the dogs and all. i haven’t had time to post or take any photographs in days! will fill you in on work in the next post, but i know you’re all just DIEING to know how cody bear and pickles are doing!
how is pickles doing???
oh my. so far her favorite back yard toys are….a broom…and a plastic flower pot.
here’s her update, though. i got an email from a woman who is fostering pickles’ brother. she wanted to see how much pickles weighs. apparently that 20 week old border collie mix puppy weighs 41.8 pounds! oh…wow. so, as soon as i got home from work i let the dogs out for peepers and poopins, then of course i weighed pickles. i don’t know how accurate my bathroom scale is, but according to it she is a 28 pounder!!!
41.8 pounds at 20 weeks!? cody bear only weighs 47 and he’s 4 years old.
she and cody bear have become good friends. they play pretty well together and she isn’t scared of him any more when he runs hell-on-paws through the yard. now she acts like she’s herding him. he of course has no idea that is what she’s doing. he is a lousy sheep.
how is cody bear doing?
oh wow. he’s great! he continues to be my photographic muse…
he’s doing so well at agility and we are almost caught up with everyone in our class. he is by far the fastest! tuesday night our friend a. came and was really supportive. every each of his runs he walked up to her like “how did i do?” and she gushed all over him.
our new challenge: the weave poles. you can hear his take on that at his sports blog.
so, that’s it for now. i may update you at work….about work. to sum it up….the *#%& went down this week.
