mom has left.  she has mopped my floors and deemed me well enough to fend for myself.  while she was mopping i decided to park it in front of some book shelves and dust.

i’m considering packing some of my books away. i never re-read books. no one wants to borrow any of the titles i have, but…i just can’t throw them away.

can you read what any of those books beneath the shelf are?  have you read them? can you tell what my major was in college?  did you laugh at all while reading the canturbury tails?

i’m feeling better, but still not up for work tomorrow.  i’m wiped out from fighting this,  but i’m relieved the antibiotics are working.  truthfully, i have-to-have-to-have-to make a huge daily effort to not be stressed out.  i always teach the pet therapy classes that long term exposure to stress chemicals sap your immunity.  and here, i’ve just taught myself…again.

in junior high we read a story in english class called “the yellow wallpaper.”  a woman had been sent to a “facility” for what was called a “rest cure.”  as women of the country became more independent and outspoken, the thought of  sending one’s wife away to rest so she could handle her tiny stresses became ridiculous.

how come i feel like i need the rest cure?  and would the members of the women’s studies board at the university be shocked to hear this and relieved that they had lost their weakest member?

maybe i need another nap.

hi all, here is the latest on those damn chicken jerky treats: (i can’t believe people are still feeding them and stores are still selling them.)

Preliminary Animal Health Notification

December 19, 2008

FDA Continues To Receive Complaints about Chicken Jerky Products for Dogs and Cautions Consumers

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to caution consumers of a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products also described as chicken tenders, strips or treats.  FDA continues to receive complaints of dogs experiencing illness that their owners or veterinarians associate with consumption of chicken jerky products. The chicken jerky products are imported to the U.S. from China.  FDA issued a cautionary warning to consumers in September 2007…..

i strongly recommend you read the rest of the article, here.

as long time readers of this blog know, i lost a dog friend to kidney disease due to these jerky treats.  mindy, buzzybeegirl’s dog.

we at cody bear’s friends  strongly recommend you

1. feed your dog high quality american made food. (unless you’re not in america. that would just be silly.)

2. strongly research your dog’s food and treats.  the ingredients and the manufacturing methods and company history.

3. develop a relationship with your vet.  this will help you get truthful and beneficial food info. in a pinch, a vet that knows you’re a good client will usually bend over backwards to fit you in in the event of an emergency.

4. exercise your dog regularly so that they are in top health.  that way if they do get their choppers on something tainted their body will be equipped to handle it.

thanks to laurie s. for forwarding the update to me.

no plane rides for cody bear…

regarding cody bear!  he is feeling a bit better and i have a few minutes to explain…

i’ve learned a bit about gastroparesis since cody was diagnosed.  and with every flare up i learn more.

his sickness mostly manifests itself with visible digestive issues, specifically…dog barf.  so it is easy for me to forget that gastroparesis affects the nervous system.  for instance, one day he is eating fine, the next day his gastroparesis flares up and he has a nasty case of motion sickness.  he can’t get comfortable no matter what.  he can’t even look at food, and with a dog as skinny as cody bear, within two days of not eating he went from 48 pounds to 43.

the queasiness also makes him cranky.

so this recent flare up reminded me that it isn’t all digestive, and i also learned that sometimes, with no trigger (ate something weird, stress) gastroparesis will just cycle through.

the sad thing is, there’s just no comforting him.  the medicine helps a little.  we actually had to up it quite a bit and add another.  but still, the naussea is in his brain and his system.  he probably feels it in his paws and intestines even.

anyway, thanks to everyone for wishing him well….yet again.  we appreciate it.

what is this?

it is a scorpion.

what is it doing on my blog?

illustrating what stung me last night.

so, yes, last night at cody bear’s agility class i was stung on my right index finger by a bark scorpion.

and i’m telling you….it hurt like a (list of expletives)

fortunately my quick thinking friends met me at my house and took care of me!  thanks a.h. and r.!

it’s freakish how it happened. and scary.  glad it stung me and not cody bear!  it is so painful.  we had to leave agility early because i was panicking.

so i didn’t sleep well.  i am going to work early, but coming back home and napping for a couple hours.

picked up pickles around 5 last night.  i had called earlier and they said her oral surgery went well and that she was being a good girl.

she was….loopy.  poor drugged girl.  and all night she kept making these little moaning sounds.  it was cute and quite pathetic.

you can tell her eyes are still dillated from the anasthaesia.

“keep her calm and resume regular exercise after two days.”

“no problem” i thought.  till about 20 minutes after i woke princess sleepy head up this morning.  now she is a restless puppy with a heap of new energy.  i wonder if that tooth was hurting her quite a bit.  she seems happier.

so, a.h. asked me yesterday, “are they going to give you her tooth?” wow…i hoped not. gross.  it was an impacted puppy tooth that was making her adult tooth grow straight up to her palate.

an hour after i chatted with a.h. i get “and here’s her tooth.”

am i an horrible dog mom for not wanting to keep this?  if, after she has passed away many many years from now….am i going to wish i still had this puppy tooth?

what would you do?

oh…how very mesial of you.

hello again! i thought i would get more specific about pickles, so you all wouldn’t worry so much.  (to the new folks: pickles is my 5 month old border collie mix puppy.  i have had her for 2 1/2 months and i got her from border collie rescue…and i cherish her)

o.k., here’s the deal.  i will write what the doctor has written on pickles’ “examination report card”

” retained decidous canine lower right causing adult tooth to be coming in very mesial to hard palate.  planned tooth removal for friday if still present.”

ok, so what that means is. estimate for surgery: 259.96 to 461.72.  that estimate includes xrays, surgery, monitors, anasthesia.  the high end of the estimate includes pre-anest complete blood panel.  which we have to do in case something is wrong, right? it also includes price bumps if they have to use something extra. which…since it’s my life we’re talking about…they will.

ok, now let’s discuss “if still present”.  the tooth has to go right away. it is starting to make the other tooth grow inward and penetrate the roof of her sweet little mouth.  but…..there is a slimmity slim slim chance that puppy tooth will fall out and none of this stuff will have to happen.

soooo, pickles life is heaven. “here picky punk, eat this marrow bone. here schmickle, chew this frozen rope toy soaked in beef broth.  her schmicky schmoo, eat this succulent dental bone.  here pickity wickity, here is a beef bone stuffed with frozen puppy canned food.”

meanwhile, cody bear’s life is a living hell.  he sits there…watching this…and he isn’t allowed to eat any of it because of HIS health problem.

i hope that while i sit here at my desk, waiting for fed ex, that the doggie tooth fairy is flittering impatiently above pickles crate.  and then when i get home from work today….i will learn that there was a dental miracle in my living room.

oh wow.  wow, my head is realling from the vet bills.  first of all, everyone is going to be fine for the most part.

but everything isn’t all rawhide rosebuds here in dogland.  after cody bear’s vet appointment it was determined he does NOT have the very serious ailment, but after several hundred bux in diagnostics and meds, he’s still not tip top and his pills are giving him a bad case of….well,….yuck. enough said. but he is gettiung better!

but then last night pickles had her follow up and it turns out she will need oral surgery….and she needs it tomorrow.

well crap.  that’s scary. i know it’s somewhat routine, but she’s my tiny baby.  plus i have to somehow come up with the money!

….in one day.

nothing brings me happiness like these two dogs do. they are so totally worth every cent of medical expense.  and everything i do i consider how it will effect them.  but it helps to know that pickles’ new favorite toy was a rubber squeaky hamburger from the dollar tree.  she’s trying to save me money.
