it’s the little things really, the surprises, the small flashes of color, that make life enjoyable.
so, about 6 years ago my neighbor gave me a bunch of cuttings from succulents where she had been house sitting. one was a 6 inch long sprig of christmas cactus. i stuck it in a pot, way too large for the wimpy thing, and put it inside on a book shelf at the window overlooking the front step. the other plants, stayed outside where they are flourishing to this day.
on the phone with my mom that week i was telling her about my new plants. when i mentioned the christmas cactus she made a point of letting me know that ….it was going to die. they never live, according to her.
it has filled the pot. it has flourished, but nary a blossom.
i mentioned the little things. how they are so important for happiness. when you’re hurried and stressed, that is when you notice the little things the least. but that is when you need to notice them the most.
christmas eve i was rushing to pack the car to get out of town. home from work, wrap the gifts, make sure all the dog’s meds are packed, will the car make the drive, yadda yadda.
a flash of pink out of the corner of my eye as i walk out the door. “what the?”
2 blossoms and 3 buds. i called my mother, elated, of course!
by the time i got back many blossoms had appeared.
isn’t it beautiful? the pads were covered in dust. i took it outside and dusted it with a soft paint brush, then put it on my honda for some photos.
i love it.

there’s a holiday buzz in the air….and it wasn’t irritating tonight because my visiting sister plied me with margaritas!
we took cody bear to the bookstore, then we took pickles to the restuarant for lunch. when they brought us our meal….they brought her a bowl of tri-tip. wtf????
then we relaxed, then we shopped, then we had some yummy chow and hit the holiday lights.

disclaimer: before you read this post, please consider refraining from offering veterinary advice.
sunday night and i’m feeling pretty blue. cody bear’s condition has taken another serious down turn. it started tuesday and has gotten worse. we go to the vet tomorrow. i spent today at urgent care and am now suckin’ down antibiotics. i thought i would cheer myself up with a few images from christmas. i know, i know. that was days ago. but humor me, ok? you may see something cute…
ok, first of all, my favorite harbinger of the holidays, the cardinal…
and now, “faux faux faux, merrrry christmas!’….
my mom decorated her christmas tree, which was actually a 7 ft high aloe plant, with fake birds and fake votive candles.
next we have the “successory” shot.
it would probably says “serenity” beneath it. but my version would say “expletive expletive cold!”
oh, and the christmas merriment with symbolism:
romping under santa’s scrutiny. and…
frolic on a poinsettia rug. how festive.
of course, we have christmas tchotchkies…
i’ll update y’all on cody bear tomorrow night.

you missed mom’s traditional christmas salsa.
and i made the traditional christmas guacamole.
both were delicious.
and you missed the annual christmas cuteness. even cuter this year with the additon of a border collie puppy.
aw! look at the happiness after a round of dog play.
you also missed cozying up around the high tech yule log. bummer!
love you big sis and big brother in law!
enter back gate of parents’ house.
cody bear instantly spots cat.
cat stuck up tree.
2 hours later…cat still stuck up tree.
and it was pooring down rain.
that was so exciting.
next, pickles obsconds with a potato from my mom’s stash of root veg. nice move, picky punk!
naturally we were cracking up.
yes, there are typically more prezzies for the pets than anyone else under the trees in our family.
the remainder of the afternoon cody bear waited at the window for more cats.
the dogs are exhausted from the drive. especially cody bear. his gastroparesis makes travel uncomfortable for him. but….he forgets all that once he sees his grandparents.
plus….he treed a cat today, so he’s feelin’ good!
more tomorrow. night dearies!
